Level You is an organization focused on creating games that do more than entertain. We are a human-centered design studio who use games to elevate topics of the human condition and in turn ‘level up’ the player too. We believe games should allow us to connect with ourselves and others which is why we strive to create meaningful work that pushes the medium of games forward and always puts the player first.
Level You is a Chicago based independent development studio founded by Trynn. Though the "Trynn" moniker was formally established in 2017, Trynn has been developing games with various teams since 2012. In September of 2017, Trynn formally established Studio Fire (now, Level You) with a coworker from DePaul University, Christopher Sosa. Together the two aim to push the medium of games in new and exciting ways.
Message from Trynn
"To me, games are an art form to the highest extreme. I believe art can move, educate, and inspire people. I believe games can both be immensely enjoyable but also hold an important message. I believe games are the future to embracing and understanding the human condition. This is why I aim to create art that allows you to embrace life, experience flow, and enjoy every moment of being human."
Trynn as a designer began with an undergraduate degree from DePaul University in Game Development. From here, Trynn moved into the corporate world working as an IT Project Manager for a financial firm in Chicago. Though managing projects was excellent experience, it also was immensely time consuming and took away from the time that could have been spent taking her personal game projects to the next level. In 2017, Trynn was invited to join DePaul University's MFA in Game Design program which is when she decided to go back to school to hone her craft further and pursue her dreams.
In August of 2017, Trynn left the project management job and began the graduate program at DePaul (currently working as the Game Design tutor for the undergraduate track). Within the first month, Trynn dived in to her first project that even during early stages was already well received. This is mostly due to the accessible nature of a game on a typically not-so-accessible platform (Virtual Reality). When the project began to gain some traction, Trynn connected with other developers from the DePaul programs who voiced their interest in joining in on the development of Unboxed. The rest is history to be made.
Level You aims to push the medium of games in a myriad ways. The first phase begins with the types of projects we work on. Our current focus is making games on emerging technology while also integrating learning science and psychology into each project on some level. We use this approach because our focus is always making games that do more than just entertain. The goal is to make projects that are recognized as “exceptional” in various industries to create a strong base to build the rest of the company up from.
Once our projects hit the level of professionalism and public visibility we strive for we would like to open up Level You as an incubation studio. Both Chris and Trynn have backgrounds in educating college-level students in game design and also have first hand experience in the industry ourselves. From this experience, we have a wealth of knowledge we would love to share. That being said, breaking into the industry is tough and often requires more experience than these grads have when exiting a university. Our mission is to give a place for recent graduates to land and gain experience in a structured working environment. This will help the students learn by doing and also give them published projects they can add to their resume so they can get the job of their dreams.
Unboxed (VR) was the first publicly available project by Level You. The game is still in development but the Beta is available for download from the Level You website. Production is expected to release summer of 2018.
You Busy is another slightly smaller game by Level You. This is a local multiplayer party game modeled after corporate structure. The game was designed to be a fun, fast paced, collaborative game that people who have experienced any kind of corporate/administrative structure in their life can enjoy and understand the system behind it. You Busy is currently in Alpha and is not currently being developed as other projects have taken priority.
All of Level You's games are designed to be accessible and open to parties of all ages and gaming experiences. We limit all our control schemes to one or two buttons and let the system behind the games do all the heavy lifting to create an enjoyable experience for any user.
